Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina
Engaging
the
Community
Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina’s community
engagement program cultivates communities that value
conservation through custom programming that seeks
to enhance environmental literacy by featuring various
components of natural resource conservation and
environmental stewardship. Over the past 昀椀ve years, FCNC has
connected over 10,923 people to our organization and the lands
we protect through 304 events and activities. Our partnership
with other nonpro昀椀ts, as well as schools, natural resource
agencies, and local community groups, is a cornerstone of this
community-centered program.
Two initiatives constitute our community engagement program:
1. Our Big Backyard (OBB) is an environmental education program that engages learners of any age
in land conservation and environmental literacy through outdoor adventures and nature-based
activities. OBB was established in 2018 and has since engaged 1,597 people through events such as
school 昀椀eld trips to FCNC preserves and parks, classroom presentations, guided public outings, and
interactive environmental education workshops.
