Growing up in the outskirts of New York City, I was amazed at
the immense line of skyscrapers 昀椀lling the horizon on train
rides to Penn Station. Manhattan Island felt incomprehensibly
large. Every street, neighborhood, and building had a distinct
personality. Traveling from one end of the island to the other felt
nearly impossible, but targeted journeys to the places I liked the
most—the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Strand bookstore,
Central Park—felt achievable.
