Recovering
from the
Storm
When Hurricane Helene struck Western North Carolina, the
devastation to lands protected by FCNC was immediate
and immense. From family farms and forests to trails and
waterways, the storm impacted every part of the landscape—
and every part of our mission.
The recovery process has taken many forms on FCNC’s various preserves, and with
generous hurricane restoration grants from Community Foundation of Western
North Carolina, Duke Energy Foundation, and Community Foundation of Burke
County, these natural spaces are being restored with a focus on enhancing their
resilience to future storms.
At Oak Hill Community Park and Forest, the heart of our community engagement
program, the effects were felt most deeply. Flooding from Helene swept through farm
昀椀elds, forests, and trails, leaving behind extensive damage. Within days, FCNC staff,
volunteers, and partner organizations mobilized to begin the work of recovery. What
followed was an inspiring show of coordination and care among staff, aid groups, and
local partners. Their efforts meant that, despite the devastation, the park reopened to
the public within weeks.
