State Trail
After years of planning, collaborating, and permitting,
the Wilderness Gateway State Trail (WGST) is 昀椀nally
under construction. The new long-distance trail

down to the stable, compacted mineral soil.

WGST is being built as a benchmark for sustainable
trail design. Every element, from landscape-centered
layout to tread construction and structural materials,
re昀氀ects a commitment to longevity and environmental
responsibility. Bridges will be constructed with 昀椀berreinforced polymer stringers and marine-grade
treated lumber, materials expected to last over 50
years. Full-bench trail construction and integrated
drainage systems will ensure minimal erosion along
the trail tread and reduce maintenance demands,

in southern McDowell County will connect Bobs
Creek State Natural Area and Box Creek Wilderness,
forming a uni昀椀ed loop that highlights the beauty of
these protected lands. This inaugural section will
embody the purpose and promise of the WGST: to
provide a new and unique outdoor experience in
Western North Carolina.
