Wilson Creek Wild and
Scenic River
Pisgah Game Lands
NC Wildlife Resources Commission and
the U.S. Forest Service acquired 2,000
acres to expand the Pisgah National
Forest and establish the Black Bear
Game Land & Pisgah Game Land. FCNC
was instrumental in negotiating, public
advocacy, and facilitating these land
acquisitions and transfers.
2007-2011
Catawba Falls
Designated a National
Wild and Scenic River
on August 18, 2000,
Wilson Creek spans 23.3
miles from Grandfather
Mountain to its con昀氀uence
with the Johns River.
FCNC has protected
approximately 1,500 acres
along 9 miles of the river.
FCNC acquired and transferred
a key parcel to the U.S. Forest
Service, creating public access to
Catawba Falls. The site became
the parking area and trailhead
that now welcome thousands
of visitors to this iconic Pisgah
National Forest destination.

Chimney Rock State Park
Johns River Game Land
FCNC led efforts that secured
legislative authorization for a new
state park in Hickory Nut Gorge
and helped assemble the initial
1,000 acres to establish Chimney
Rock State Park.
FCNC partnered with state agencies and local
supporters to secure thousands of acres and
establish the Johns River Game Land.

South Mountains Headwaters Preserve
2005-2017
Catawba Headwaters Preserve
FCNC permanently protected 2,400+ acres
along the Left Prong Catawba River, the 昀椀rst
major tributary of the Catawba River near
its point of origin, including conservation
easements on 477 acres of the Creston
Development & establishing FCNC’s 1,900+
acre Catawba Headwaters Preserve.
FCNC protected 2,205 acres along South Mountains State
Park’s eastern edge to safeguard the Jacob Fork and Henry
Fork watersheds, establishing 1,450 acres as a conservancy
preserve and transferring 755 acres to the state park.
